Teen dies hours before welcome-home parade

What was supposed to be a welcome-home parade instead turned into a somber candlelight vigil for a terminally ill 15-year-old Kansas girl who?died hours before she was to return home.

Residents of the town of Mulvane had decorated Main Street with ribbons and signs in orange ? the color of leukemia awareness ? to welcome Taylor Heersche home Tuesday evening, The Wichita Eagle reported.

Taylor had been terminally ill with cancer and had told her family she wanted to be at home to die.?Doctors at Children?s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City told the family she had only a few more days to live, so the plan was to release her to be with her family and friends.

But Taylor passed away Tuesday morning at the hospital, with her parents, DeAnne and Dan Heersche, at her side.

Instead of the parade, Mulvane residents gathered for a candlelight vigil late Tuesday to honor the Mulvane High School sophomore, the Eagle reported.

?I?ll bet every parent says that their kid was special. But she was a real people person. There were no strangers,? DeAnne Heersche said of her daughter, according to the Eagle.

?That kind of kid leaves a huge hole not only in our family, but in the community. We?re all going to miss her horribly.?

"It's still a homecoming in our eyes, it's just a different home that she's going to, a better home that she's going to, so it's more of a celebration than the grief," ?Maggie Keys, one of Taylor's classmates, was quoted as saying by KWCH-TV.

Taylor, a sophomore at Mulvane High School, was diagnosed with the leukemia in May 2008 when she was 10.

Taylor's leukemia had been in remission for several years following chemotherapy. But last winter the cancer returned aggressively.

Services are Sunday at Central Community Church in Wichita, with a private burial Monday.

It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Apple

A prepared shopper waits for the Seattle Microsoft Store to open, Oct. 26, 2012. A man waits for the Microsoft Store to open in Seattle on Friday

Courtesy Microsoft.

The first thing you?ll notice about Windows 8 is that it isn?t one operating system. It?s two. There are a couple different ways to do pretty much everything in Microsoft?s new OS. This sounds complicated, but it?s by design. Microsoft?s main goal in building Windows 8 was flexibility?the operating system is meant to run on traditional PCs, touchscreen tablets, and a new class of in-between ?hybrid? devices (picture an iPad with a slide-out keyboard). To make all this possible, Microsoft shoved two different interfaces into Windows 8. For every computing task, you can use traditional Windows programs or new, ?modern? programs, which look and work completely differently from the old stuff. Microsoft is hoping that you?and just as important, programmers?will love the new way. And it?s hoping that all this novelty will propel Windows back to the top of the tech world.

I hope it succeeds. If Windows? new interface takes off, it will be a boon for users, programmers, and for the tech industry as a whole. It will make for better, faster, safer computers, and probably ones that last longer, too. But that?s a big if. The trouble for Microsoft is that Windows 8?s new programming model is pretty similar to Apple?s model?it limits what apps can do, and it requires apps to go through Microsoft?s built-in Windows Store. Lots of Windows users, and lots of Windows programmers, are hooked on the old way of doing things, and they may not take to the Apple-esque model.

The bigger problem is timing: The Windows Store would have been a hit five years ago. Today it?s just one of many app stores, and the Windows name no longer carries the cachet with programmers it once did. In the 1990s, Windows beat the Mac because it attracted more people to create more and better software?and more and better software made Windows better for users, which led to more software, and on and on in a virtuous network effects loop. But now Microsoft finds itself on the wrong end of this phenomenon. Apple?and, to a lesser extent, Android?are winning the network effects war, and it?s going to be very hard for Microsoft to come back.

But first, for people who haven?t used Windows 8, let me describe what I mean by the ?old? and ?new? way of getting stuff done. When you turn on any new Windows computer, your programs will run in one of two distinct interfaces. First, there?s the Windows you?re familiar with?the classic interface that lets you run multiple programs in different windows at the same, and that works best with a mouse and keyboard. In Windows 8, that interface is called the Desktop. If you buy a computer with Windows 8 and you don?t like the fact that everything?s different, just click the Desktop icon and you?ll feel right at home.

Then there?s the new Windows interface. Microsoft used to call it ?Metro,? but that name was too simple (and already trademarked by somebody else), so now, insanely and noncatchily, the company refers to the interface as the ?Modern UI style.? This modern interface is Windows 8?s main view; it?s what greets you every time you start up your Windows 8 computer. Apps designed for this new view are completely different from Windows programs of yore. First, new apps are optimized for touchscreen devices?app elements are big enough to hit with a finger, and the system can respond to multifinger gestures. What?s more, these new Windows programs don?t run in windows. Instead, by default, a ?modern? Windows app takes up your whole screen, and at most you can have two modern apps on your screen at the same time?one huge one and one in a small sidebar. In other words, these are like the apps you run on your iPad.

Just as iOS apps are only available through Apple?s App Store, you can get modern UI style Windows apps only through Windows 8?s built-in Windows Store. And the Windows Store has strict rules: Apps designed for the modern UI must declare how they?re going to use your system, they?re limited to performing only a few actions in the ?background? (that is, when you switch to other apps), they?ve got to be kind to your computer?s battery, and they?ve got to be easy to uninstall and upgrade. In February, when I first wrote about this new regime for Windows programs, many loyal Windows fans responded with horror. The Windows Store seemed to represent the Apple-ificiation of Microsoft. One of the things people love about Windows is the freedom it gives to programmers and users?you can run pretty much any program you want, and programs have the ability to access every part of your system. The new model circumscribes those liberties. It transforms Windows machines into something closer to appliances.

Sleep duration affects hunger differently in men and women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that adults get could lead to reduced food intake, but the hormonal process differs between men and women.

"Restricting sleep in healthy, normal weight participants has limited effects on metabolic risk factors and may affect food intake regulating hormones differently in men and women," said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, PhD, FAHA, the study's principal investigator. "We were surprised by the lack of a significant effect of sleep on glucose and insulin, leptin, and sex differences in the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone GLP-1."

The study, appearing in the November issue of the journal SLEEP, tracked the sleep duration, glucose dysregulation, and hormonal regulation of appetite in 27 normal weight, 30- to 45-year-old men and women. Participants provided fasting blood draws, and they were studied under two sleep conditions: Short (4 hours) or habitual (9 hours). Short sleep increased total ghrelin levels in men but not women and reduced GLP-1 levels in women but not in men, a sex difference that has not been reported before. The results suggest that the common susceptibility to overeat during short sleep is related to increased appetite in men and reduced feelings of fullness in women.

"Our results point to the complexity of the relationship between sleep duration and energy balance regulation," St-Onge said. "The state of energy balance, whether someone is in a period of weight loss or weight gain, may be critical in the metabolic and hormonal responses to sleep restriction."

According to the authors, this is the largest controlled clinical investigation of the effects of sleep reduction on hormonal regulation of food intake. The results support a causal role of sleep duration on energy intake and weight control.

Wall Street back in business after storm shutdown

(AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange will open on Wednesday ? because it had to open.

In a bit of welcome news for fund managers, investors and even the economy, the company that operates the iconic exchange at 11 Wall Street announced it would not extend its trading shutdown to a third day.

Wall Street experts had feared that another delay because of Hurricane Sandy would have meant a dangerous back-up of customer orders to buy and sell stock. It also could have dealt a blow to the image of U.S. markets, already damaged by investor distrust, sudden market swings and a series of trading glitches, including the botched IPO of Facebook.

"The world is used to seeing the financial markets through the lens of the floor of New York Stock Exchange," said Larry Leibowtiz, chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, which operates the exchange. "It gives them a sense of comfort."

The New York Stock Exchange said its building and trading floor are fully operational and that normal trading will resume Wednesday at the usual starting time of 9:30 a.m. Since power is out in much of downtown Manhattan, the company said it will run the exchange using its own backup generators, a first.

The closing on Tuesday marked the first time since 1888 that the NYSE halted trading for two consecutive days because of weather. As the NYSE staff scrambled Tuesday to make sure that that 124-year record wouldn't be surpassed by another day of delay, there were reports on the Internet that the exchange floor had flooded.

It was a false alarm.

The exchange also said that a key data center in New Jersey housing computers used to trade stocks was in good condition after the storm and would be fully up and running Wednesday.

Mark Travis, president of Intrepid Capital Funds in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., said he was worried that the longer markets remained closed, the greater the backlog of pending trades that would need to be cleared when normal trading resumed.

"You build up pressure when you keep people out of the markets," Travis said. "Trading volume that may normally happen in a two-day period could get compressed into an hour or two when markets reopen."

Add to that Hurricane Sandy's timing, which was awful for the exchange. Instead of arriving on a weekend when the exchange is closed, it blasted into Manhattan on a Monday, and the start of a crucial week, too.

This week is the last full one before the presidential election. What's more, the government publishes a key report Friday that traders like to bet ahead of ? October's unemployment figures.

Another wrinkle: Wednesday is the last day of the month, which is when traders and fund managers look to stock markets for final prices to value holdings for reports they're required to send to investors and regulators.

"They need to have current prices for their holdings," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments in Chicago. "It's a positive that they are reopening the market."

Jim Paulsen, chief strategist at Wells Capital Management, agreed, but for a different reason ? the economy.

"It's not just about trading; it's about confidence," Paulsen said. "We're watching these horrific images of the storm, and people are thinking whether they should go ahead with that big purchase they were thinking about. It doesn't do any good to have another day with headlines saying the U.S can't figure out how to open its stock exchange."

The exchange spent much of Tuesday testing its trading systems using its all-electronic Arca system. But Leibowitz, the chief operating officer, said there would be enough traders and market makers on the floor of the exchange tomorrow ? 100 or so, he estimated. He said many are staying in nearby hotels.

The exchange also tested to see whether fuel trucks could get to the exchange despite flooded highways, tunnels and bridges. Leibowitz said the trucks were able to arrive, and the exchange took the opportunity to top off the tanks for the backup generators. The exchange can operate for 40 hours on backup generators before refueling.

"It's not like your car," he said. "You don't wait until fuel light goes on."

Thomas Caldwell, chairman of Caldwell Securities, said he was concerned there would be a big news event that would change investors' opinions about stocks during the shutdown. That could have led to a flood of orders to buy or sell stock when the market reopened. Luckily, that didn't happen.

"Europe is still Europe, Japan is still Japan," he said.

In addition to the halted trading, dozens of companies postponed earnings reports this week because of the storm.

In Europe, though, business went on as usual Tuesday. Stock markets rose broadly after falling the day before. Trading was subdued in the wake of the storm. Britain's FTSE 100 index rose 0.9 percent, Germany's DAX rose 1.1 percent and the CAC-40 in France was 1.5 percent higher.

Crude oil rose 14 cents to settle at $85.68 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

U.S. bond trading was closed Tuesday. It will resume Wednesday.

Chinese protest factory even after official pledge

NINGBO, China (AP) ? Protests against the expansion of a factory are resuming in an eastern China city despite a local government pledge to halt the project.

About 200 protesters gathered outside Ningbo government offices Monday for a fourth straight day of protests. Police channeled the crowd from the front of the building off to a side street.

The protests have occasionally featured violent clashes between protesters and police, who have detained some demonstrators. On Sunday night, the government promised to halt the expansion of the ethylene plant belonging to state-run Sinopec, though the crowd continued to protest, leaving only late in the night.

The protest, the latest on environmental issues, comes as China's authoritarian government wants calm for a transfer of power in the Communist Party leadership at a party congress that starts Nov. 8.

My "Mom" Cookies.......Yes I Hide Them lol - Frugal Family Tree

I am in Cookie LOVE! I have always enjoyed Pepperidge Farm Cookies. They are to me a Mom cookie. The ones you savor, hide in the back of the cupboard and after the kids are in bed you sit down and enjoy, or wait is that just what I do lol. My Mom would have a little bag of this brand in the house and they were special cookies to get one. I liked that, they seemed more cool than a chips a hoy or an oreo. Now as a Mom myself I so get why these are a special Mom cookie. I recently spotted this limited edition cookie Caramel Apple Pie. YUM! I so recommend buying these if you are a soft cookie fan and stick them far in the back of the cupboard lol. :)

Choosing Flooring for Children's Rooms | Toddler Times

Flooring Options Choosing The Best Flooring Options for Kids Spaces: Wisdom from a Mom Whos Been There, Done ThatWhen faced with a decision about which type of flooring to install in the children?s spaces in your home, it can be difficult to wade through all the possibilities. Each type of flooring has its own pros and cons, and weighing one against the other is sometimes a challenge.

This decision can be particularly difficult for parents of young children, who know their families? needs will change in a few short years.

Here are some factors that are important to look at when deciding which type of flooring is the best option for your family.

Safety First

Certain types of floors have less skid and are more prone for slips and falls. If you have a baby now, it?s hard to grasp that soon your sweet, sedentary bundle will be up and about, running non-stop! It?s important that children?s spaces are safe for them to move naturally and explore their environments.

Are Allergies an Issue?

If your child is allergic to dust mites, your best bet is probably to forgo carpets and opt for something like hardwoods or even cork floors. You?ll also want to choose area rugs that are machine-washable and easy to care for.

Durability is Key

Kids spend much of their lives at floor-level, zooming toy cars and building block towers. All that zooming and building is a lot of fun, but it also damage flooring that?s not designed to weather abuse. Think about the types of spills, stains, and scratches your floor is likely to experience over time and consider which is your best option based on the big picture.

Will it Stand the Test of Time?

That bubble-gum pink carpet would be cute in your daughter?s princess themed nursery, but how would she feel about it as a tomboy adolescent? Make sure your flooring choices will be able to stand the test of time, as your family?s needs will likely change.

(AP) ? The final hours of the HMS Bounty were as dramatic as the Hollywood adventure films she starred in, with the crew abandoning ship in life rafts as their stately craft slowly went down in the immense waves churned up by Hurricane Sandy off the North Carolina coast.

By the time the first rescue helicopter arrived, all that was visible of the replica 18th-century sailing vessel was a strobe light atop the mighty ship's submerged masts. The roiling Atlantic Ocean had claimed the rest.

The Coast Guard rescued 14 crew members by helicopter Monday. Hours later, rescuers found one of the missing crew members, but she was unresponsive. And they were still searching for the captain.

"We pray there's no loss of life and that they rescue all of the crew," said Bill Foster, mayor of St. Petersburg, Fla., a frequent winter port for the ship and where it had been expected to arrive in November. "When a crew decides it's safer in an inflatable than it is on deck, then you know she's in peril."

The ship was originally built for the 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando, and it was featured in several other films over the years, including one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

The vessel left Connecticut on Thursday with a crew of 11 men and five women, ranging in age from 20 to 66. Everyone aboard knew the journey could be treacherous.

"This will be a tough voyage for Bounty," read a posting on the ship's Facebook page that showed a map of its coordinates and satellite images of the storm.

The Bounty's Facebook page reads like a ship's log of her activities, with many photos of the majestic vessel plying deep blue waters and the crew working in the rigging or keeping watch on the wood-planked deck.

As Sandy's massive size became more apparent, a post on Saturday tried to soothe any worried supporters: "Rest assured that the Bounty is safe and in very capable hands. Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision ... NOT AT ALL ... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is ... A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!"

But as the storm gathered strength, the Facebook posts grew grimmer. By mid-morning Monday, the last update was short and ominous: "Please bear with us ... There are so many conflicting stories going on now. We are waiting for some confirmation."

Tracie Simonin, director of the HMS Bounty Organization, said the ship tried to stay clear of Sandy's power.

"It was something that we and the captain of the ship were aware of," Simonin said.

Coast Guard video of the rescue showed crew members being loaded one by one into a basket before the basket was hoisted into the helicopter.

When they returned to the mainland, some were wrapped in blankets, still wearing the blazing red survival suits they put on to stay warm in the chilly waters.

"It's one of the biggest seas I've ever been in. It was huge out there," said Coast Guard rescue swimmer Randy Haba, who helped pluck four crew members off one of the canopied life rafts and a fifth who was bobbing alone in the waves.

A helicopter pilot said the waves appeared to be 30 feet high during the rescue. The Coast Guard said in a news release that waves in many places topped out around 18 feet.

The survivors received medical attention and were to be interviewed for a Coast Guard investigation. The Coast Guard did not make them available to reporters.

The crew member who was found unresponsive, 42-year-old Claudene Christian, was taken to a hospital in Elizabeth City, where she was listed in critical condition Monday evening.

The mother of another crew member, 20-year-old Anna Sprague, said her daughter had been aboard the HMS Bounty since May.

Mary Ellen Sprague, of Savannah, Ga., said she had spoken with her daughter twice but didn't know many details because her daughter, normally talkative and outgoing, was being uncharacteristically quiet.

"She's very upset," Sprague said by telephone.

Sprague said her daughter told her the ship's diesel engines failed, and then it started taking on water.

The crew was eager to return to St. Petersburg ? and to calmer waters.

"I know they were very much looking forward to being here," said Carol Everson, general manager of the pier where the vessel docks. "They were very excited about coming down."

The Bounty's captain, Robin Walbridge, was from St. Petersburg, she said.

Wallbridge learned to sail at age 10, according to his biography on the Bounty's website. Prior to the Bounty, he served as first mate on the H.M.S. Rose ? the Bounty's sister ship.

A man who answered the door at a home listed as being owned by the captain and his wife said: "Not a good time," and closed the door.

Foster said the city on Florida's Gulf Coast always considered itself the ship's home.

"We're feeling a real sense of loss as a community," he said. "We grew up with the Bounty."

Foster, who was raised in St. Petersburg, remembered the ship as a family tourist attraction along the waterfront in the 1960s and 1970s. He recalled replicas of caves, a history display and pirate-themed exhibits near the Bounty. As a teenager, he attended dances on the ship.

About 10 years ago, the ship underwent a multimillion-dollar restoration.

The ship generally travels in the spring and summer. In August, large crowds greeted it when sailing into St. Augustine, Fla., Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C.

Hawaii is spared tsunami damage

Dr Charles McCreery, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center: "It's mostly a marine threat now"

A tsunami triggered by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake thousands of miles away in Canada has hit the island chain of Hawaii, without causing major damage.

Emergency sirens sounded to alert residents late on Saturday, and people were ordered out of of low-lying areas.

The first waves were reported to be up to 2.5ft (76cm) in one area, but were generally smaller than expected.

Hours later, the tsunami warning was downgraded and the state governor said Hawaii could count its blessings.

Wave heights of three to six feet had been predicted in some areas.

The quake struck 125 miles (200km) south-west of the Canadian town of Prince Rupert at a depth of 11 miles (18km), said the US Geological Survey.

While the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not initially expect a threat beyond the immediate area, it later warned that a tsunami had been generated "that could cause damage along the coastline of all islands in the state of Hawaii."

The centre called for urgent action to protect lives and property. People living in areas considered to be at risk were urged to move to higher ground.

First waves hit the archipelago, made up of hundreds of islands spread over some 1,500 miles, from around 22:30 local (08:30GMT).

A senior scientist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, Gerard Fryer, told journalists that while the tsunami had arrived as predicted, he had been "expecting it to be a little bigger."

A civil defence source tweeted that Wailoa Harbor on Hawaii island was reporting 4ft waves every six minutes.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, in an announcement posted at 00:54 local, that the tsunami warning was cancelled.

"Based on all available data, the tsunami threat has decreased and is now at the advisory level and not expected to increase.

"Sea level changes and strong currents may still occur along all coasts that could be a hazard to swimmers and boaters as well as to persons near the shore at beaches and in harbours and marinas. The threat may continue for several hours," it said.

In the wake of the cancellation, police began reopening roads and people in low-lying areas area were being allowed home, local media reported.

"We want to make certain that everybody understands this advisory now. The water is still treacherous; the water is still dangerous but we can go home and, as I say, we can count our blessings here in Hawaii," Governor Neil Abercrombie said.

Earlier, an eyewitness watching the beaches on Kauai island told the BBC that the waves were big and that a "strange mixture of fear and anticipation" reigned.

"A plane with a siren flew over ... and everyone left the beach and coastal buildings. All the boats have been taken out of the water. It's empty down there which is weird. People went buying gas and groceries," Mike Dexter-Smith said.

'Everything moving'

The quake struck the coast of western Canada at around 03:00 GMT and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock.

There were no immediate reports of damage on the Canadian coast following the earthquake.

Tsunami alerts that were issued for coastal areas of Alaska and British Columbia were swiftly downgraded.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements, close to the epicentre, said the initial quake lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," he told Associated Press. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

A resident of the mainland town of Prince Rupert, Grainne Barthe, told AP: "Everything was moving. It was crazy. I've felt earthquakes before but this was the biggest. It was nerve-wracking. I thought we should be going under a table."

Following the quake, small waves measuring 69 cm (27 inches) were reported on the north-east tip of Haida Gwai, while parts of the north-east coast of Vancouver Island saw waves up to 55cm high.

97% Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

"Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" is an insightful, engaging and inspiring documentary about the activist and famed artist. That having been said, I am sure there are some people who might find it strange that I use the word inspiring for an artist who makes his art from smashing antique vases and pointing his middle finger at landmarks, especially Tiananmen Square.(By the way, does anybody know if there are any photos of his middle finger in front of Yankee Stadium?) I think both are symbolic of how nothing is sacred, especially the Chinese government who he is in a running battle with to gain transparency into the inner workings of its bureaucracy. After they shut down his blog, he went on Twitter and distributed his documentaries for free over the internet. His style is definitely confrontational, as somebody says he reminds him of a hooligan, but in a good way.(As Ani DiFranco once sang, being nice is overrated.) Remember, we are all hooligans, right now. Ai Weiwei's activism hit a critical point when he criticized the treatment of the poor during the 2008 Olympics and the response to the Sichuan earthquake which killed several thousand children in faulty construction that has been compared to tofu. As New Yorker magazine correspondent Evan Osnos points out, Ai Weiwei was initially inspired politically by the Iran Contra hearings when he was living in the United States that sought to hold a government responsible but did not work as well as some of us would have liked. So, instead of the fortune his son would inherit, he will have something much more precious to leave him. Now, if I can only figure out if the cat opening the door is supposed to be a metaphor or just darn cute.

While Sunday matinees went on as planned, evening performances for all Broadway shows on Sunday, October 28 and Monday, October 29, have been cancelled. The suspension of the transit system? forced Broadway to shut down as it would be difficult for theatergoers to get to and leave the theaters.

"The safety and security of theatregoers and employees is everyone's primary concern. As a result of the suspension of public transportation by government authorities in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, evening performances will be cancelled tonight, Sunday, October 28th, and Monday evening, October 29th," Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League said.

Those who had tickets to any show during these times may get a refund. Those who bought their tickets through Telecharge or Ticketmaster via phone or online will get a refund on their credit card within 7-10 business days.

Those who purchased tickets at the Box Office can go back to the theater's Box Office and may get a full refund for the show's tickets or they can be exchanged for another date.

Those who bought group tickets must contact the Group Sales Agent for information about how to get a refund.

Shows that don't usually have performances on Mondays will not be affected by these changes.

Bomb, other attacks in Iraq leave 18 dead

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A bombing near a playground and other insurgent attacks killed 18 people including several children in Iraq on Saturday, challenging government efforts to promote a sense of stability by preventing attacks during a major Muslim holiday.

The strikes underscored the difficulties facing Iraq's leadership as it struggles to keep its citizens safe. Authorities have said they intended to increase security to thwart attackers who might use the four-day Eid al-Adha to strike when people are off work and families gather in public places.

The deadlier of two blasts in Baghdad struck near a playground and a small market in the neighborhood of Bawiya in eastern Baghdad. Police officials said eight people were killed, including four children. Another 24 people, including children, were wounded, they said.

"Nobody expected this explosion because our neighborhood has been living in peace, away from the violence hitting the rest of the capital," said Bassem Mohammed, a 35-year-old father of three in the neighborhood who was startled by the blast.

"We feel sad for the children who thought that they would spend a happy time during Eid, but instead ended up getting killed or hurt."

Authorities have said they planned to increase the number of checkpoints, shut some roads and deploy extra personnel during the holiday period.

Elsewhere, a bomb attached to a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims killed five people and wounded nine, according to police. The so-called sticky bomb, hidden on the underside of the bus, detonated as the pilgrims were heading to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad to mark Eid, a major Muslim holiday.

In the northern city of Mosul, gunmen broke into the houses of two Shabak families, killing a boy and his parents in one and a mother and daughter in the other, according to police. A bomb exploded near the house of another Shabak family, wounding six family members.

Shabaks are ethnically Turkomen and Shiite by religion. Most Shabaks were driven out of Mosul by Sunni militants during the sectarian fighting a few years ago.

Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice, is a major Muslim holiday that commemorates what Muslims believe was the Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, the Biblical Ishmael, as a test of his faith from God. Christians and Jews believe another of Abraham's sons, Isaac, was the one almost sacrificed.

Eid al-Adha, which began Friday, marks the end of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims worldwide typically slaughter lambs and other animals to commemorate the holiday, and share some meat with the poor.

Violence has ebbed across Iraq, but insurgents frequently attack security forces and civilians in an attempt to undermine the country's Shiite-led government.

Holidays are a particular time of concern for security forces. A wave of attacks shortly before another Muslim holiday in August, Eid al-Fitr, killed more than 90 people in one of the deadliest days in Iraq this year.

Iran sees conspiracy in box office success of Ben Affleck's 'Argo' (+video)

Based on true events surrounding the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, 'Argo' opened this weekend at No. 2 and rose to the top spot on Monday. Iranians are less enthused.

American moviegoers flocked to theaters this weekend to see Ben Affleck's long-anticipated thriller Argo, which has been generating headlines since it was first screened at the Toronto Film Festival last month.?

Based on a true story about how the CIA smuggled six American diplomats out of Iran after the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy, the film opened on Oct. 12 and came in at No. 2 in box office sales over the weekend, after "Taken 2" (an action film starring Liam Neeson). By Oct. 15, Argo held the top spot.?

But inside?Iran, where the decision by a group of Iranian students to storm the US Embassy and hold Americans hostage for 444 days is still controversial and vibrantly debated, the press has paid Argo scant attention. The few comments the film has received are generally negative ? Iran's state-run IRNA news agency called Argo "Hollywood?s latest failed attempt to confront the Islamic Revolution" ? and?replete with complaints that the movie portrays all Iranians as stereotypically aggressive and unrefined and fails to give viewers enough historical context.?(Pirated copies of American films typically become available in Iran a few months before the films open in the US, and are easily accessed by the public.)

?Argo makes the people of Iran look like they have no self-determination, and indisputably support violence,? writes Meysam Karimi in a lengthy review?for the popular Iran-based film magazine website, Moviemag.???For me, as an Iranian ? this makes [the storyline behind] Argo much less believable.?

Iran?s semi-official Fars News Agency?labels Argo ?anti-Iranian" and painted the film as a flop. Citing unidentified "news agencies," it asserted that Argo only?managed to reach second place in the US and Canada because the filmmakers artificially boosted sales by purchasing tickets ?en masse? and giving them away for free to random people. ?

Argo??was unable to become a box office hit in spite of considerable advertisement," Fars wrote.??The filmmakers tried very hard and used a variety of methods to increase ticket sales, but they were unsuccessful. ? Even though ?Taken 2? was in its second week, Argo still couldn?t beat it to first place in the box office ? due to a lack of interest among its own [North American] audience.?

Moviemag, the privately owned online film magazine, is more sober in its assessment of the film, acknowledging Ben Affleck?s strong directorial skill and the film?s attention-grabbing story line and?giving the film a four out of five star rating.

"If I were to set aside issues [with how Iran is portrayed], I must admit that Argo is one of this year?s best movies, and expect it to be awarded an Oscar for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin?s role," he writes.?

?Without a doubt, a non-Iranian viewer will highly enjoy seeing Argo because the story is strong and keeps the viewer?s attention through to the end,? he adds. ?But for an Iranian who counts this subject as part of our country?s history, the view may be a bit different.?

Almost all coverage of Argo also noted that the film?s Toronto Film Festival debut, Sept. 7, is the same day Canada closed its embassy this year in Tehran and announced the expulsion of Iran?s diplomats from Ottawa. ? ?

?Perhaps it was a coincidence,? writes Mr. Karimi for Moviemag. ?But for [the embassy closure] to take place during the Toronto Film Festival, right when this film was being screened, somewhat undermines the theory that this happened by accident.?
