Jimmy van Ostrand hit a two-run homer and Skyler Stromsmoe stroked a bases-loaded double in the seventh inning to lead Canada to an 11-1 victory over Great Britain on Thursday night in the opening game of a qualifying series for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.Canada broke open what had been a close game by scoring eight times in the seventh, the last of them coming on a two-run triple by Tyson Gillies. After the one-out hit by Gillies, the game was called due to the WBC's 10-run rule.
Starter Shawn Hill, who pitches for Toronto's AAA affiliate in Las Vegas, gave up three hits and struck out seven in 5.2 innings to earn the win for Canada, whose second-round opponent on Saturday will be the winner of Friday night's matchup between host Germany and the Czech Republic. Britain will meet the loser of that game.
The winner of the double-elimination series, which ends Monday, will advance to the 16-team WBC tournament in March.
Thursday's loss went to lefthander Chris Reed, who gave up two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. The first run followed a bizarre play in which third baseman Michael Johnson appeared to have easily tagged out Canada's Chris Robinson as Robinson went from first to third on a single by DH Tim Smith. The runner, who went into the base standing up, was ruled safe and he later scored on a wild pitch.
Britain's only run came on a long homer to left by shortstop Albert Cartwright in the top of the sixth.
