Yahoo! revamps website with eye on Facebook, Twitter

(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc is rolling out a revamped look for its website aimed at making the Web portal more modern and attractive to users.

"We wanted it to be familiar but also wanted it to embrace some of the modern paradigms of the Web," Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said on NBC's "Today" show on Wednesday.

"One thing that I really like is this very personalized newsfeed, it's infinite and you can go on scrolling forever," she said.

In a blog post, Mayer said the company will begin introducing the changes over the next few days, with more changes and improvements expected in the coming months. The endless newsfeed containing stories, pictures or video is similar to feeds on Facebook Inc as well as Twitter.

Mayer also said in her blog that the website would feature newly designed applications, allow users to log in with their Yahoo or Facebook IDs and would work well on smartphones and tablets.

Yahoo is one of the world's most-visited online properties, but revenue has declined in recent years amid competition from Google and Facebook.

Yahoo has also been beset by internal turmoil that has resulted in a revolving door of CEOs.

Mayer, 37, took over after a tumultuous period at Yahoo in which former CEO Scott Thompson resigned after less than six months on the job over a controversy about his academic credentials, and during which Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board and cut his ties with the company.

Yahoo's 2012 revenue was $5 billion. It has been flat year over year, off from some $6.3 billion in 2010.

Obama calls Republican senators on immigration

People listen to speakers while receiving proof of U.S. citizenship during a ceremony in San Francisco, Jan. 30,??President Barack Obama reached out by telephone Tuesday to Republican senators playing a key role in the debate on overhauling America?s immigration policy, the White House said. He called Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John McCain of Arizona and Marco Rubio of Florida ?to discuss their shared commitment to bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform,? spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

?The president reiterated that he remains supportive of the effort underway in Congress, and that he hopes that they can produce a bill as soon as possible that reflects shared core principles on reform,? Carney said.

The press secretary underlined that the conversations built on outreach that has ?taken place at the staff level??a shot at GOP complaints that the White House hasn?t reached out much to congressional Republicans on the issue.

?The president has made clear that he believes commonsense reform needs to include strengthening border security, creating an earned path to citizenship, holding employers accountable, and streamlining legal immigration,? Carney said.

"As the president made clear when he met with Democratic senators involved in the process last week, that while he is pleased with the progress and supportive of the effort to date, he is prepared to submit his own legislation if Congress fails to act," Carney added. "He thanked the senators for their leadership, and made clear that he and his staff look forward to continuing to work together with their teams to achieve needed reform."

Obama wasn't able to reach Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was traveling, but "looks forward to discussing the issue with him in the near future."

Scorsese becomes first filmmaker to deliver Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Martin Scorsese has been tapped to deliver the 2013 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities.

The Oscar-winning director of "The Departed" and "Raging Bull" will hold forth on his career as one of the foremost chroniclers of Catholic guilt, violence and criminality in the annual talk sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Scorsese is the first filmmaker to get the honor, a prestigious forum that in the past has drawn such leading figures in the arts and academia as Toni Morrison, Robert Penn Warren and Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust. It carries with it a $10,000 honorarium.

"Martin Scorsese is a scholar of, advocate for, and icon of American cinema," said NEH Chairman Jim Leach in a statement. "He is the first filmmaker designated as a Jefferson Lecturer, but he follows in the tradition of earlier speakers like John Updike, Barbara Tuchman, and Arthur Miller in revealing a profound understanding and empathy for the human condition."

Scorsese will present the lecture on April 1 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Scorsese has directed and produced more than 50 films, including such classics as "Goodfellas," "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver." He is currently working with Leonardo DiCaprio on "The Wolf of Wall Street," which will tell the true story of a New York stockbroker who becomes embroiled in a securities fraud case.

Obama to receive Israel presidential medal

Barack Obama will become the first serving US president to receive Israel's presidential medal. Source: AAP

BARACK Obama will become the first serving US president to receive Israel's presidential medal, from his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres on a visit to the Jewish state next month, Peres's office says.

"President Obama has made a unique and meaningful contribution to strengthening the state of Israel and the security of its people," it said in a statement.

"Barack Obama is a true friend of the state of Israel and has been since the beginning of his public life. As president of the United States he has stood beside Israel in times of crisis," it added.

Israel's presidential medal of distinction is awarded to individuals or organisations who have contributed to Israeli society and Israel's image in the world.

The White House has not announced specific dates for the Obama visit, his first to Israel and the West Bank as president.

Israeli media reports and a Palestinian official have said it will run from March 20-22 and take in talks with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders in Jerusalem and Ramallah.

The White House has kept expectations deliberately low, saying Obama has no plans to use the trip to push new proposals to break the more than two-year deadlock in peace talks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his talks with Obama would focus on Iran's nuclear program, the conflict in Syria and long-stalled stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.

Buying the right insurance for your car is essential to prevent financial difficulties when an accident occurs. The article below will describe how to ask the right questions from your broker or agent, what coverage to buy and how to avoid duplicate coverage. Read the article and ask the right questions from your insurance professional.

Try to keep a good driving records. Having tickets or accidents on your driving record can raise your rates on your insurance policy. There are times when you can?t avoid the accident or ticket, so you should check out traffic school to see if this will help clean your record and make your insurance premiums lower.

Getting married, especially if you are an under-25 male driver, can save you a significant amount on your car insurance. There are people that have found they saved almost 40% on their insurance after getting married. If there is a significant other in your life, walking them down the aisle might walk down your insurance premiums.

TIP! Don?t sign up without doing your research if your insurer offers you used parts to fulfill your warranty. The majority of auto manufacturers and repair shops provide a warranty on their work.

Don?t overlook the option of having a lower premium by choosing a higher deductible. Raising the price of the deductible on your policy has the largest influence on the cost of your insurance. Of course, you will be held responsible for paying the deductible if you are involved in an accident. To cover the cost of that accident, having an emergency fund in place will be helpful.

It might be a good idea to remove car rental coverage, if it is part of your insurance policy. You probably never use it, even though you pay for it. If you?re trying to cut back the amount you have to pay, it may be worth removing it. Just remember that you won?t have that option should you actually need it.

TIP! Keeping your license clean is crucial when it comes to how much you pay for insurance. When accidents and tickets are on your driving record, your insurance costs can go through the roof.

To get the cheapest insurance rate, list all the safety features of your car. You will find that safety features like air bags and alarms will get you a better rate on your insurance bill because of their ability to reduce future claims. Even after-market safety features help to reduce your insurance policy cost.

The best thing you can do to to keep your car insurance payments low is to maintain a spotless driving record. Nothing sends your insurance payments skyrocketing as rapidly as a driving accident. If you are at risk of getting in an accident try to avoid the situation. For example, if you have trouble with your vision at night, avoid driving after daylight hours.

When your claim is less that $25,000 you should try to settle it without the assistance of lawyers. It is important to simply work with claims adjusters to settle on an agreement. Often, the cost of an attorney excedes what he or she might save you in court.

TIP! In most states you are required to have a liability insurance in order to get your car on the road. All citizens should know how much insurance coverage is necessary in your state.

Only insure those drivers who actually use your car. This can help keep you from paying too much for auto insurance. Your premium will be reduced if you remove drivers from your policy. Since driver under 25 pay higher rates, you can lower your monthly insurance premium by removing young drivers from your policy.

Get rates from many different insurance companies before you select the right one for your automobile. You may have to search for the ideal rate.

Keep on file all records of all insurance bills you paid. This is great if you ever run into any problems with your insurance provider as you now have physical proof.

TIP! If you want lower car insurance premiums, think about raising the deductibles of the policy. Because people with higher deductibles typically file fewer claims, insurance companies typically charge less for customers who maintain a high deductible.

When you are considering car insurance quotes, the amount of your annual premium will cost is just a minimal part of the factors you need to consider. You also need to familiarize yourself with the details of a policy, such as the amount of the deductible, the coverage levels and the limitations of any benefits.

Coverage on policies can vary; therefore, it is important to understand what coverage is included in your policy. There are coverages for a wide array of insurance needs. In order to get other types of coverage, including collision and comprehensive, you need to actively request them. Make sure the coverage you are paying for covers what you need it to cover.

Usually, you will end up paying a larger amount than someone who has a clean record. Some insurance companies even help drivers who have a few bad records get a good rate.

TIP! By choosing the deductible that is the highest amount, your premium will be the lowest it can be. A higher deductible means you will have to cover the cost of minor accidents, but you will still be covered in the event of a total loss or if you cause an accident.

Car insurance can save your life in the event of an accident. Choosing the right coverage is important, as a crash can ruin your life if you can?t pay the associated costs. Use the helpful information you learned here to help you obtain the coverage that is right for you.
