'A mess everywhere': East Coast struggles to recover

(Reuters) - Rescuers searched flooded streets and swamped houses for survivors, drivers lined up for hours to get scarce gasoline and millions remained without power on Thursday as New York City and nearby coastal towns struggled to recover from one of the biggest storms ever to hit the United States.

New Yorkers heard the rumble of subway trains for the first time in four days as limited service resumed, but the lower half of Manhattan still lacked power and surrounding areas including Staten Island, the New Jersey shore and the city of Hoboken remained crippled from a record storm surge and flooding.

At least 87 people died in the "superstorm" that ravaged the northeastern United States on Monday night. Officials said the number could climb as rescuers searched house-to-house through coastal towns.

The hunt for gasoline added to a climate of uncertainty as the death toll and price tag of the storm rose.

"I'm so stressed out," said Jessica Bajno, 29, a school teacher from Elmont, Long Island, who was waiting in line for gas. "I've been driving around to nearby towns all morning, and being careful about not running out of gas in the process. Everything is closed. I'm feeling anxious."

More deaths were recorded overnight in the New York City borough of Staten Island, where authorities recovered 17 bodies after the storm lifted whole houses off their foundations. Among the dead were two boys, aged 4 and 2, who were swept from their mother's arms by the floodwaters, police said.

In all, 38 people died in New York City, officials said.

The financial cost of the storm also promised to be staggering. Disaster modeling company Eqecat estimates Sandy caused up to $20 billion in insured losses and $50 billion in economic losses, double its previous forecast.

At the high end of the range, Sandy would rank as the fourth-costliest catastrophe ever in the United States, according to the Insurance Information Institute, behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the September 11 attacks of 2001, and Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

JERSEY SHORE STAGGERS

In hard-hit New Jersey, where oceanside towns saw entire neighborhoods swallowed by seawater and the Atlantic City boardwalk was destroyed, the death toll doubled to 12.

Floodwaters finally receded from the streets of Hoboken, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, leaving behind a stinky mess of submerged basements and displaced cars littering the sidewalks.

"The water was rushing in. It was like a river coming," said Benedicte Lenoble, a photo researcher from Hoboken. "Now it's a mess everywhere. There's no power. The stores aren't open. Recovery? I don't know."

In neighboring Jersey City, drivers negotiated intersections without traffic lights. Shops were shuttered and lines formed outside pharmacies while people piled sodden mattresses and furniture along the streets. The city imposed a curfew and banned driving from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

New Jersey favorite son Bruce Springsteen, along with Jon Bon Jovi and Sting, will headline a benefit concert for storm victims Friday night on NBC television, the network announced.

The U.S. government agreed to cover 100 percent of emergency power and public transportation costs through November 9 in eight New Jersey counties. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which already pledged aid directly to victims and local governments, told New Jersey's U.S. senators of the decision, an aide to Senator Frank Lautenberg said.

Sandy started as a late-season hurricane in the Caribbean, where it killed 69 people, before smashing ashore in the United States with 80 mph winds. It stretched from the Carolinas to Connecticut and was the largest storm by area to hit the United States in decades.

About 4.6 million homes and businesses in 15 U.S. states were without power on Thursday, down from a record high of nearly 8.5 million.

Sandy made landfall in New Jersey with a full moon around high tide, creating a record storm surge that flooded lower Manhattan. By Thursday, the storm had dissipated over the North American mainland.

OBAMA BACK ON CAMPAIGN

After a four-day suspension to deal with the storm, President Barack Obama returned to the campaign trail. Polls show him locked in a virtual tie with Republican challenger Mitt Romney before Tuesday's presidential election.

The president toured devastated New Jersey areas on Wednesday with the state's Republican governor, Chris Christie, a vocal Romney supporter who nonetheless strongly praised Obama's response to the disaster.

Obama received an update on storm recovery efforts Thursday from his crisis management team, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Air Force One.

More than 36,000 disaster survivors from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have applied for federal disaster assistance and more than $3.4 million in direct assistance has already been approved, Carney said.

GASOLINE SCARCE

Fuel supplies into New York and New Jersey were being choked off in several ways. Two refineries that make up a quarter of the region's refining capacity were still idle due to power outages or flooding. The New York Harbor waterway that imports a fifth of the area's fuel was still closed to traffic, and major import terminals were damaged and powerless.

In addition, the main oil pipeline from the Gulf Coast, which pumps 15 percent of the East Coast's fuel, remained shut.

The scarcity of fuel, electricity and supplies made cleanup more daunting for barrier towns such as Seaside Heights, part of the Jersey Shore.

Seaside Heights residents who obeyed the mandatory evacuation order were cut off from their homes. The entire community was submerged by the storm surge that washed over the island and into the bay that separates it from the mainland.

"The bay met the ocean," said Frank Meszaros, 43, standing next to the closed bridge that kept him from returning home.

Chris Delman, 30, saw a photograph of his house in a local newspaper Wednesday, noticing it was still standing.

"We ain't living in Seaside no more, that's obvious," Delman said. "I just want to know what I have left."

Report: 'Star Wars 7' won't be based on the books

By Leslie Gornstein, E! Online

If Disney is?buying?LucasFilm, how will that affect Star Wars: Episode 7 and other Star Wars projects? Any word on what the movie will be about?--Flannel, via?Twitter?

"Star Wars" fans are already wondering what the seventh film will bring, and it's not due out till 2015.

Well, we know that, whatever the plot of Episode 7, George Lucas won't have a heavy hand in the day-to-day creation of it. He's apparently written the treatments for the films, but he won't produce or direct--an excellent opportunity for another visionary to jettison Jar Jar Binks out of an airlock permanently.?

As for the plot, Star Wars superfans have a theory on what they'll be seeing next. But I have a surprise for them: They're wrong. If you're a fan, you're definitely gonna want to read on.

Read more details about Star Wars episodes 8, 9 and beyond

First of all, you should know that there is an official canon concerning the Star Wars universe. Those stories cover the years after rebel victory (i.e., after Return of the Jedi). It's written in a series of books called the Thrawn Trilogy, by author Timothy Zahn. Die-hard Star Wars fans know the trilogy well, and they say that a big-screen adaptation of the first book, ?"Heir to the Empire," would make the most logical Episode 7.

"Of all the speculation out there about the content of this new trilogy, that's the single most concrete idea," says Eric Geller of the fan site TheForce.net. "It's almost inevitable that the story will take place in the same time frame as those books."

So what happens in "those books?"

Well, Luke Skywalker meets a real would-be assassin lady named Mara Jade, who was trained to avenge the Emperor by crushing Luke's pretty blond head. Instead, Jade falls for Luke and, a subsequent graphic novel, the two marry. Skywalker also has to deal with the fact that he's the only Jedi left, at least, for now, and he goes about trying to fix that.

Send us your questions on Facebook!

Princess Leia and Han Solo also play heavily into the Thrawn Trilogy, popping out a pair of twins (of course) among other things. As for the name Thrawn, well, that refers to a grand admiral with imperial sympathies who takes over as the leader of the vanquished enemy faction.

So is that the basis for Episode 7 or not? I've heard directly from LucasFilm and other sources close to the picture, and they say: Definitely not.?

"It's an original story," a LucasFilm source tells me.

In other words, forget the Star Wars novels. Forget the graphic novels. Forget everything you think you know about what happens to Luke Skywalker. According to my sources, Episode 7 will literally be nothing you've ever seen or read before from the Star Wars universe.

I also hear from several sources that, no matter what you may hear to the contrary, no director has been officially attached to the project.

Meanwhile, there isn't much news regarding the other big Star Wars projects currently in development.

A spoofy cartoon TV series, Detours, was announced in August, spearheaded by Seth Green and the other creators of Robot Chicken. No release dates or networks were revealed, but Disney has said that it envisions some sort of Star Wars presence on its Disney XD channel. I wouldn't be surprised if Detours landed there.

Disney is paying how much for LucasFilm!?

Lastly, there's the live action series, which has been bubbling around since 2008 and which is supposed to take place between Episodes 3 and 4, when Luke Skywalker is growing up.

As I reported earlier, Lucasfilm was still talking in enthusiastic terms about Star Wars: Underworld less than a year ago. At that time, the show had a lot of scripts in the can but no financing. But if there's one thing that Disney has, it's money. Still, insiders tell me it's too soon to expect any announcements on either series.

American Horror Story, Season 2

121031_TVC_AHS_201_2 Evan Peters as Kit and Lizzie Brochere as Grace.

BYRON J COHEN/FX

Every week in?Slate?s?American Horror Story TV club, J. Bryan Lowder will have an IM conversation with a different?AHS fan. This week, he rehashes episode 2.2 with Jeff Bloomer, SlateV?s editor/blogger. ?

J. Bryan Lowder: Happy Halloween, Mr. Bloomer! I'm feeling a little spooked-out that this week's episode is titled "Nor'ester" just after Hurricane Sandy mated with one of those to become a SUPERSTORM and howl through my backyard. How are you holding up?

Jeff Bloomer: It was certainly a dark and stormy night here and at Briarcliff! The sudden storm was definitely an eerie development, but I think this one had more to do with lazy writing than with Mother Nature.

Lowder: Oh really, so I take it you were not gripped by this week's howls and groans? Explain yourself! (I should say, I found the episode to be a fun, creaky romp, perfect for All Hallow?s Eve.)

Bloomer: I confess I am growing a little restless with this season. Though I love the characteristic all-in performances and the affectionate riffs on horror gospel, I am finding I have a basic issue: It hasn't been very scary, and I'm not sure any of the characters are going in directions that aren't obvious. The surgery sequences are the only ones getting under my skin, but even those feel a tad perfunctory.

Lowder: That's fascinating. I'd agree that this season has me on edge a bit less than last, but I wonder how much of my anxiety then was about family drama amidst the Harmon clan and not Murder House?s ectoplasmic infestation. However, I do have to say that that last scene with a...cosmetically altered?Shelly gave me the shakes. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'd like to chat for a bit about the demon story line. It seems that Sister Mary's little friend is taking on a puckish kind of instigator role, bringing out less supernatural demons among other characters, Sister Jude's alcoholism being one. How do you feel about Mary/demon pulling all the strings?

Bloomer: I would also peg that as a lazy device, but Lily Rabe is biting into the role with such obvious glee, I can't be anything but charmed by Mary. She has been unleashed and is having a deliriously good time. I did note, though, that in order for her to go wild, the writers promptly made Sister Jude into a pathetic, rambling mess. Wouldn't it be more fun to see those two go at each other full throttle?

Lowder: Ooh, yes please! Though you're right that Sister Jude lost herself a bit this week, I have a feeling she won't give up so easily. I have visions of those two locked immortal combat, flying around in a supernatural death match for the souls of Briarcliff. (But maybe that's beyond FX's budget). In any case, I bet she will revivify herself next week.

Bloomer: Actual flying, let's hope!

Lowder: This episode just felt so exposition heavy?we saw more of the aliens, finally glimpsed those creatures in the woods, found out that Dr. Arden has a small or otherwise unsatisfactory penis?that perhaps Jude's domineering personality had to take a back seat.

Bloomer: Yes, let's hope Dr. Arden's black soul weathers down to more than a sadistic fetish for shame and an anatomical snub. But to harken back to the episode?s opening for a second: How are we feeling about the thrill-seeker subplot? I have to admit I was pleased to learn it would be more than loud screams and running in circles every week. Are we to believe they've been stalked by "real" Bloody Face, and these two guys just now turned up?

Lowder: HA, yes, as followers of this TV Club will know, I found the modern day plot tiresome from the get-go. And now, Maroon 5 and Channing Tatum?s wife are dead?I hope. But perhaps with the introduction of the Bloody Face imitators, we'll expand out to actually learn something new about Briarcliff. As to whether?that?Bloody Face is the?real one,?I have no idea. Halloween shops are well-stocked with skin-masks this time of year, apparently.

Bloomer: I am always sad to see Jenna Dewan-Tatum lose work, but progress is progress. Other than that, I guess I am pleased the aliens aren?t being totally abandoned. I was surprised to read in an earlier entry that most people thought their inclusion was "weird." Weird in a show featuring lusty demon nuns and multiple guys with skin masks!? I do hope they eventually come for poor Kit at some point.

Lowder: Yes, while I do maintain that their inclusion is dissonant with the overall tone of the show, I kinda like the slashiness of it. I'm especially into Dr. Arden's bumbling experiments with the microchip bug. I'm hoping it jumps into someone's ear soon and assimilates them into the Borg collective.

Bloomer: That is such a great idea! Briarcliff could definitely stand to have some bodies snatched. I feel like we're jumping all over (much like this episode...), but should we also work in the obligatory mention of the Creatures in the Woods? That whole deal better not turn into an M. Night Shyamalan movie.

Lowder: Haha, yeah, it totally has that vibe. From what I could gather tonight, they're some form of mutant human, who are perhaps fragile right now? Arden mentioned that he needed to nurse them through the winter. But surely they have more going on than just monstrousness. Mary's demon seems particularly intrigued?I?m wondering if they don't have some kind of powers or something.

Bloomer: Perhaps. I wonder why they quarantine them in the woods?seems like they would be right at home with some of Briarcliff's (few?) real crazies.

Lowder: My sense was that Sister Jude's snooping proved too risky to keep them in-house. But one wonders what keeps them from escaping the grounds? In any case, we know that Shelly's dreams of escape are over?unless it was some kind of nightmare, Dr. Arden has straight-up cut off her legs! No trick-or-treating for her. Speaking of which, what are you going out as tonight?

Bloomer: My Halloween costume this year consisted of a few tablespoons of fake blood on my face and a lot of random guesses about what I was. The real answer was lazy. What about you?

Lowder:?I am someone who has not left the house in four days due to the weather. Which means somewhat unkempt and a little stir-crazy. Given the lack of food in my fridge, hopefully the delivery guy won't be too frightened.

Thursday: What other writers and Slate commenters thought about Episode 3.
